LAmour fou : Photography and Surrealism
Product Map:

Product Description
Now back in stock: A collection of fabulous photographs by the foremost Surrealist artists.

Much has been written about Surrealist painting and sculpture, but most of the erotic, disorienting, and exquisite Surrealist photographs of Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Andre Breton, Brassai, Salvador Dali, Andre Kertesz, and Hans Bellmer have remained all but nameless–until now. Habitual criticism has viewed Surrealist photography as a pale imitation of authentic Surrealist work. The assumption has been that photography, a “realistic” medium, is fundamentally incompatible with a yield devoted to the wildly subjective, the world of dreams, and the unconscious. As a consequence, Surrealist photography, a major body of twentieth-century art, has remained largely unexplored.

L’ Amour fou is the first book to study the crucial role photography did in fact play in the Surrealist movement. It shows how photographers enlisted into the service of “subjective” Surrealism their medium’s very aver to “objective” reality. Of greatest appeal, of course, is the book’s abundant reproductions of the fantastic and distorted photographic creations that must be acknowledged as an vital part of the Surrealist oeuvre.

Additional Fine points: 200 duotones, 24 full-color illustrations. 9 x 12″ trim size. Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C./Abbeville Press, New York, co-publishers. First published 1985.

Visions from Within the Mechanism: The Industrial Surrealism of Jeffrey Scott
Product Map:

Product Description
Is this the work of a visual genius or a thinker madman? Or both? Jeffery Scott is a photographic liar. The stunning and hyper-realistic photography presented here is not captured in real time, but through a laborious process of manipulation. Each depiction represents an average of fifty hours of meticulous work in which elements are assembled from dozens of images to construct the combined whole. Mr. Scott conjures incredible characters, environments and situations that thoroughly blur the line linking the real and the imagined. Layer upon layer of information reveals in-depth philosophies, concepts and tales. Thought-provoking titles communicate thoughts linking actor and viewer. This is a stunning introduction to deep emotive and contemplative realms.

Surrealism and Architecture
Product Map:

Product Description

This is a historically informed examination of architecture’s perceived absence in surrealist thought, surrealist tendencies in the theories and projects of modern architecture, and the place of surrealist thought in contemporary design.

This book represents current insights into surrealism in the thought and practice of modern architecture. In these essays, the role of the subconscious, the techniques of defamiliarization, aesthetic and social forces affecting the objects, interiors, cities and landscapes of the twentieth century are revealed. The book contains a diversity of voices from across modern art and architecture to bring into focus what is often overlooked in the histories of the modernist avant-garde. This collection examines the practices of writers, artists, architects, and urbanists with emphasis on a critique of the everyday world-view, offering alternative models of subjectivity, artistic effect, and the production of meanings in the built world.

Madder Love: Queer Men and the Precincts of Surrealism
Product Map:

Product Description
Dreams, desire, poorly lit streets and the sudden miracles that appear there, the deep places of the mind. Two groups made these the sensitivity of a radical project of liberation: queers and surrealism.

Surpass than many others, queers know the power of these dark areas. The rich, intricate culture we’ve made for ourselves is constantly ready to allocate us to follow our dreams and fantasies, carried by the surging waves of sexuality into some pretty and magical places. It s just as clear that the surrealists were chasing similar adventures as far back as the Twenties and Thirties. Agreed the similarity of their motivations, why have the two so often been in violent challenger to each additional?

Madder Like is an anthology of cutting-edge writing that wants to look at that a modest quicker. It opens up the bizarre possibilities of queer literature even as simultaneously displacing the historic homophobia of Surrealism.

From marvel states to erotic obsessions, from the muttering of the unconscious to analogous worlds (and the weirder cracks in this one) Madder Like tackles why surrealism can be so queer, and why being queer can be so bizarre.

Contributions from Will Aitken, Stephen Beachy, Jeffery Beam, Stephen Boyer, Tom Cardamone, Sven Davisson, Peter Dube, Craig L. Gidney, Nicholas Alexander Hayes, Trebor Healey, Kevin Killian, Shaun Levin and Rob Stephenson help make the case.

Surrealism and Painting
Product Map:

Product Description
Formerly published in 1928 and augmented throughout the instigator’s life, Surrealism and Painting is the single most vital statement ever written on Surrealist art. Even as many pages have been devoted to visual Surrealism, this is the only book on the suject by the movement’s founder and prime theorist. It contains André Breton’s seminal treatise on the origins and foundations of artistic Surrealism, with his trenchant assessments of its precursors and practitioners, and his call for the fake arts to “refer to a purely internal model.” Also included are essays–many of them classics in their own right–on Picasso, Duchamp, Kahlo, Dalí, Ernst, Masson, Gorky, Picabia, Miró, Magritte, Kandinsky, and others, as well as pieces on Gaulish art, outsider art, and the folk arts of Haiti and Oceania. But higher than and beyond the theme matter, what makes this book so enduringly compelling is Breton’s signature mixture of rigorous erudition and visceral passion, his sense of adventure, and his discoveries of many of Inventiveness’s most prominent figures early in their careers. Long unavailable in English, Surrealism and Painting is not only a supremely exciting work of art criticism, but also one of the three or four indispensable references for any honest conversation of modern art.

Artists Contain: Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Andre Masson, Max Ernst,Yves Tanguy, Francis Picabia, Joan Miro, and Rene Magritte amongts others

Introduction by Mark Polizzotti.
